How Do I Prepare for Class?

Julie is a work-from-home, homeschooling mom of three young boys who love being out in nature, especially at the beach. She has been a Qkids teacher for three years and loves to help new and potential teachers by sharing her experiences

Class preparation is as unique as the teacher doing the preparation. A lot of factors can influence how a teacher might prepare. Factors such as how familiar the teacher is with the curriculum if the teacher is a morning person or a night owl, or the teaching space.

I typically wake up at least forty-five minutes before logging in to teach. I know that some teachers can wake up a mere ten minutes before class, but this does not work for me. In order to be at my best in class, I need to go through this routine which I will share with you. This information could be helpful to anyone who is hoping to become a Qkids teacher and wants insight on the daily life of a Qkids teacher or seasoned teacher who is curious or might want to shake things up a bit.

First, coffee. Setting up the coffee maker is part of my bedtime routine so that I can simply push the button when I wake up. Sometimes I will drink it in the shower, other times I may step outside to breathe in some fresh air. At this time I am sure to avoid any social media, news, or emails that I may be tempted to check in an effort to keep my emotions positive and light-hearted. I also turn on a lot of lights to help in the waking up process. Sometimes I do some light stretching or exercise to get my heart rate elevated and body awake.

Before I prepare my appearance to be camera-ready I will go ahead and start up my computer and log in to the teaching software allowing plenty of time to check for any updates and to download all of the classes I have on my schedule that morning. I do this to be sure any technical issues do not cause me to be late for class.

I do apply makeup before class so that I look my best for my students and look less tired if I have not achieved an ideal amount of sleep the night before. I must address the importance of a good night's sleep. Getting to bed on time to get a good night of sleep before class is really when the class preparations begin and is a vital step to being at your best for every class. I have an alarm set on my phone to remind me when it is time to get ready for bed, and another to remind me to get in the bed. My phone alarms really do play a big role in keeping me on task.

Each night before I go to bed I set several alarms on my phone that help guides me through my morning preparations. Specifically, I set a wake-up alarm, a second wake up alarm five minutes later, a ten minutes before the class alarm, a five-minutes before the class alarm, and a login now alarm. I have done this for a long time and it helps me stay on track and on time for class.

I typically do not review my classes nor do I use props, however, some teachers might set time aside for this. I do recommend the newest of teachers to go through each class to become familiar with the curriculum, but with time teachers are more able to “wing it” successfully. New teachers will learn that the ability to “wing it” is helpful as sometimes classes will be switched last minute forcing you to do so.

In the moments before class, I take a deep breath and put on a smile as I think about how grateful I am to be able to work from home and have so much fun as I teach.

I share my preparations with you in hopes that it helps you in your journey as a Qkids teacher! I encourage you to visit my YouTube Channel if you are interested in learning more from my experiences or want to become a Qkids teacher yourself.
