My Plunge into the Online ESL World
Corey is a Qkids teacher from SW Florida who loves spending time with her husband and two boys going on adventures. She has her Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Psychology, her teaching certificate in Social Science and loves to grow and learn any chance she gets. A little known fun fact about Corey is that she is a beekeeper! She has been a family photographer for the past 10 years and loves to make people smile and share memories wherever she goes.
So many bees, so little protective clothing!
How did I get here?
A year ago this June, I casually mentioned that I was looking into online ESL as a job consideration to one of my close friends. I had heard about it for a couple of years and just always thought it was too good to be true. After all, good income opportunities for stay-at-home parents are few and far between, from my findings. My friend’s reply? ‘Oh yeah, my cousin does that! Let me give you her e-mail and you can pick her brain.’ So I did. My journey into this world had started. I reached out to her cousin and was assured it was all on the up and up and a legitimate opportunity. Great! So now, as the researcher I am, it was time to figure out which company I should choose.
I scoured YouTube for videos on the different online ESL companies. Through this, I narrowed my choices down to two different companies. My next stop was Facebook. I found a great page to join that had teachers from all of the different companies in one place. This was a researcher's dream! I spent about a month researching, watching videos, reading posts and finally got the courage to make a post. My first post on the Facebook page was ‘What are the appearance guidelines and restrictions for teachers?' You see, I had very, very purple hair. I was assured that my hair would not be an issue and was even told by a Qkids employee that this company ‘welcomes diversity.' I loved this. In this post, I met my mentor and decided that Qkids was the right company for me.

Why do I need a mentor?
The Qkids staff is amazing. However, having a mentor proved to be invaluable. She was available during daytime hours, when Qkids staff wasn't, to answer my questions and concerns. She gave me tips on my application video and reviewed all of my items before I made my official submission. That video was the bane of my existence. It was so nerve-wracking to make (for me). It took me probably 15 takes before I settled on one I was happy with! But, phew, it was done. She helped to prep me for my demo interviews (there were two) and even helped review my trial classes (I did four) so that I understood how to play all of the games. Qkids also provides amazing resources for their teachers and helpful videos for classes and games, etc. But having a person, who was just like me once was an awesome experience.
Bonus…she got a little extra cash for helping me. How cool is that?! I am proud to have taken what she had taught me and used it not only in my classrooms but to help others as a mentor just like she did for me. She gave me the encouragement I needed to click that submit button.
Back to business…why did I choose Qkids?
During all of my extensive research, I just kept coming back to Qkids. The major thing that stuck out to me was that they book my classes. I am not required to ‘sell' myself via a profile to get bookings. They take the stress out of scheduling. I give my availability and I am booked within those slots. Easy peasy. The second thing that stuck out to me was their platform. I love how it is more of an app-based platform. All of the games and information are integrated into each class. After the first couple of weeks of teaching, I knew the games well enough to be able to just log in, click enter into my classroom and go for it. The third and final observation that sealed my choice was that Qkids teachers seemed to have fewer complaints than other companies. There are always downfalls with everything in life, but Qkids appeared to have less. Their teachers on the Facebook pages seemed happier. I like being happy. Let's do this!
Once I was officially hired with Qkids, it only got better. They have an amazing attendance policy. They truly understand that life happens! They give opportunities to earn bonuses every week with attendance and performance. They continually improve their platform and are constantly releasing new and innovative ways to reach more students. I have never once felt like a number at Qkids. Coaches and Class Coordination are always receptive to questions and it really feels like a working family (cheesy, I know, but hey, it’s true).
What are you waiting for?
From the time I decided to pursue this opportunity until I was hired was about a two-month-long period. I was hired in the middle of August, last year. I regret not starting sooner. This job has changed my life and my family's life for the better. I am a stay-at-home mother who was extremely anxious about the possibility of having to go back to work. Qkids has allowed me to continue to be home with my children full-time. I have taught 600+ classes for the most amazing company and met at least 700 awesome students from China. How cool is that?! I wake up and start almost every morning with Qkids and wouldn't want it any other way.
Don’t be like me and wait. If you’ve been on the fence about joining the online ESL world, let me tell you, it was and continues to be worth it for me. I would love to give you an awesome mentoring experience just like I had! Preparing Your Teaching Background
Hi Qkids teachers!
Hope you are having a good week. Today Momo wants to share with you some helpful tips about how to set up your awesome teaching background. Many of you already have great props to attract students' attention; however, your teaching background is equally important since students see it for the entire class. A messy, unorganized background will not only distract students but also negatively impact your teacher rating. Your teaching style, outfit, lighting, and background all factor into your overall class rating.
Below are some points you should pay attention to if you want to improve your teaching background: 1. The room lighting must be bright enough for students to see you clearly. You should try out different angles in your room and find the sweet spot. Do not point your camera toward the ceiling or light since it will be too bright for students to look at you. 2. The ideal class background is you facing against a wall. It can …
