1. Can you tell us more about the Qkids background check?
Qkids just released an announcement encouraging all contractors to undergo a company-approved background check. There are two areas that will be reviewed: criminal records and a proof of educational background (i.e., enrollment OR graduation).

What if someone is no longer enrolled and may or may not be in the future? What if someone had an A.A. and planned to stop there? Will this prevent teachers from being invited to sign the new 6-month contract?

2. Where should teachers go to do a background check?
After careful research, Qkids has selected one screening company to support this effort: Sterling Talent Solutions. Sterling is a reputable North American company with global partners. It conducts screenings using a secure online portal trusted across industries. Sterling will conduct both the background check and education verification. Qkids will pay the fees for processing background checks with Sterling.

3. What will this background check process look like for teachers?
For new candidates, the measures will apply immediately.

For existing teachers:
1) Everyone will be individually contacted by Qkids staff to start the background check.
1) After being reached, teachers will log in to a secure online portal, sign a consent form with Sterling and enter required personal information.
3)  Sterling processes the checks.  [If you are a current hired teacher, you will be able to continue teaching as the background check is processed.]
4) Checkpoint with Qkids.

4. What materials do teachers need to prepare for the background check?
No materials will need to be submitted.  Sterling requires a limited amount of personal information that is standard to Canada/USA for filing requests from such an agency.

5. If a teacher has recently completed a background check, do they still need to go through the process?
Qkids is encouraging all current teachers to use the Sterling portal and process even if they have had a background check recently. Working with Sterling facilitates a smooth transition and an adequate and appropriate record to meet Qkids improved standard. The fee will be covered by Qkids and the procedure is simple.

6. What if a teacher wants to dispute the results of a background check.
If you want to dispute the finding of your report, please contact Sterling directly at 888.889.5248.

7. Sterling requires clients to fill out a consent form. Can you tell the teachers more about that?
In order to conduct the background check, teachers and candidates must provide authorization to do so in writing before proceeding. The consent letter is built into the portal.

8. How long will it take to complete my background check?
Most background checks can be completed within a week. However, there can be extenuating circumstances that cause delays in the process. Sterling has informed Qkids that the most common delays are related to court closures or unresponsiveness academic institutions.

9. Will someone contact me if there is a problem with my background check?
If additional information is needed to conduct the background check, either Sterling or Qkids will reach out to you.

10. What happens if someone can’t remember every detail about their attendance and graduation dates for college?
Everyone should try to provide Sterling the most accurate information possible. The information you provide will be compared to the information found on the record.

11. What if someone was in school when they started, but have had to take a break since being with Qkids?
The education verification process will allow Sterling to confirm attendance dates and completion records. If a teacher has any extenuating circumstances, that can be discussed with their coach once the coach reaches out.

12. How do I request a free copy of my background check?
You are entitled to a free copy of the completed report in your name. If you would like to receive it, please contact Sterling at 888.889.5248.

13. What if I am or believe that I am a victim of identity theft?
The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives you specific rights when you are, or believe that you are, the victim of identity theft. A brief summary of the rights designed to help you recover from identity theft can be found here. You may also find additional resources here:

14. Will an expunged record show up on my background check?
If an expunged record (a record that is officially sealed by a judge) is properly filed with a court, it should not be reported.

15. Will juvenile records show up on my background check?
Sterling does not search juvenile courts for juvenile records.

16. How will Sterling/Qkids protect my privacy?
Both Sterling and Qkids aim to collect, use, disclose and retain personal information in accordance with your consents and the law. You can find full details of the privacy practices that will apply for background checks in the relevant privacy statement: (https://www.sterlingtalentsolutions.com/about/privacy-clients/)

17. Can you say more about what the new Attendance Bonus policy will be like?
First and foremost, the new attendance bonus is not active yet. Qkids will make an official announcement about the start date for this new policy when it is fully ready to launch.

So what is the difference between the current and future attendance bonus policy?

The current attendance bonus structure works like this:
1) Teachers can not earn attendance bonus credit for standby classes, unless they turn into a regular class.
2) Teachers who have absences need to pay attention to a system of points that can be deducted.

In the future, the attendance bonus policy will allow teachers to earn points for standby lessons, as long as they fulfill the requirement for the standby/regular slot.

As well, when this policy begins, Qkids will eliminate the point deduction system. So teachers will not follow a rule of point deductions for attendance. Instead the conditions for earning the bonus will be based on simple eligibility rules.
1) If a teacher has been present for at least 15 lessons for the time expected, then the teacher will be eligible for the whole attendance bonus that week.
2) If a teacher is absent for four lessons, then the teacher will be ineligible for the whole attendance bonus that week.
3) If a teacher gives no notification at all for their absence (“no show”), then the teacher will be ineligible for the whole attendance bonus that week.

When the Attendance Bonus policy update is finalized and ready to launch, teachers will receive an announcement from CCT.

18&19. Why and how will teachers be submitting invoices?
Qkids would like to provide a more reliable, efficient way to verify hours. Currently, the company and teachers rely on a combination of emails, the app and WeChat communication.  IT is working hard to finalize a feature that will be built into the app for teachers to verify and submit their hours.

However, this feature may not be released for some time yet, so updates are still to come. When the Invoice policy update is finalized and ready to launch, teachers will receive an announcement from CCT.

What is the purpose of the contract?
Qkids is proud to be an industry leader in online educational technology, as well as in providing independent contractors opportunities to take part in the best online teaching experience possible.

In order to keep advancing and to promote a higher standard of practice, Qkids will issue contracts that better lay out the terms of service and the terms for teachers as independent contractors.

20. Do the teachers need to reach out about a contract?
Qkids has a large teacher population that they value and serve.  Given Qkids’ size and commitment to working with all teachers to determine the best next step, the company expects this transition to take place as a process.

The contract transition process will extend over the next several months. Coaches will reach out on an individual basis.

21. What is the purpose of a signed contract?

Qkids is proud to be an industry leader in online educational technology, as well as in providing independent contractors opportunities to take part in the best online teaching experience possible. In order to keep advancing and to promote a higher standard of practice, Qkids will issue contracts that better lay out the terms of service and the terms for teachers as independent contractors.

Additional FAQs

A. Can Qkids or Sterling share the results of my background check with another party?
The results of your background check cannot be shared with a third party unless you have specifically provided authorization to do so.

B. Regarding an education verification: What will happen if teachers were hired and exempted from the educational background criteria because they met other criteria? What if someone is no longer enrolled and may or may not be in the future? What if someone had an A.A. and planned to stop there? Will this prevent teachers from being invited to sign the new 6-month contract?
Teachers will be invited to sign contracts on a 1-1 basis according to a combination of factors: overall skills, consistent use of great teaching qualities, reception by families, growth and adaptability. Additionally, the coaching team will weigh credentials and the possibility of grandfathering in long-term and consistently high performing teachers.

Nevertheless, Qkids is strongly advising any contractors who do not hold a B.A. to pursue a TEFL/TESOL online certificate. As the English education market grows in China, it is very likely that there will be new national guidelines and regulations promulgated by PRC government that require an individual to verify that they meet the national qualifications for teaching children in another language, even via an online platform.

C. What will happen if I have a criminal record, will that exclude me from joining or continuing with Qkids?
Qkids has its own specific hiring and review criteria. Generally, the mere presence of a minor offense (e.g., speeding tickets, parking tickets) will not exclude you from joining or continuing with Qkids as an independent contractor. Qkids will conduct a comprehensive analysis before making final decisions.

D. When is the best time for teachers to share any concerns or extenuating circumstances related to either a criminal record or educational background?
It will be best to share information when each individual coach reaches out on a 1-1 basis. The coaching team will strive to be supportive, fair and efficient in helping teachers move forward with Qkids.
